It almost sounds like the set-up for a joke: What do you get when you take 332 guests, an equal number of chairs and hundreds of jars of paint? In this case, though, the answer isn’t a punchline but a Guinness World Book record-setter!

Art Deco is the theme of Salon, the International Decorative Arts Show, taking place April 13 through 16 at the High School of Art and Design, 245 E. 56th St.  in midtown Manhattan.

“This is the 22nd gathering of Salon, and it’s the first time that it’s ever been in New York City,” reports Arlene McLoughlin, who is co-hosting the event with Jeanne S. Schnupp.

Sure, it's important to use the right products and to hire the best people when you need to get a job done, but your most important focus should be on having a system that boosts productivity.

Get ready for the second ArtFusion! After a successful debut last year, ArtFusion will take place Oct. 25-Oct. 29 at the YMCA of the Rockies Conference Complex in Estes Park, Colo.

“This event is for the professional and aspiring decorative painter and artist to celebrate our industry, explore the latest products, tools and trends, while meeting others in the industry and forming great connections and friendships,” says event organizer Kathy Boyd, who adds that this year’s even will be raising money for International Hope Builders.

The dynamic husband-and-wife team of Mike and Mickie Cooper know a thing or two about managing a successful project. The two are the owners of Murals & More LLC in Franklin, Tenn. Mike has been painting murals professionally for more than 25 years, with hundreds of exterior and interior murals under his belt. Both he and Mickie have been teaching mural classes all over the country as well as in their studio in Franklin, and they also write The Fresh Perspective column for the monthly Focus on Faux online magazine.


Chris Burke, aka Mr. Faux, is a Washington, D.C., area artist who has taken his faux-painting skills over the last two-and-a-half decades from the simple to the sublime. Starting with basic one-color glazes, stripes and other straightforward wall effects, Chris refined and added to his faux-finishing portfolio with such artistic specialties as woodgraining, marbling, Venetian plasters, torn wallpaper and murals.

With the theme “Unmasking the Vision,” this year’s convention of the International Decorative Artisans League will have some surprises. The biggest? The convention’s collaboration with the Concrete Décor Show.

Painted Paper Countertops from the Rescue and Resurface company represent a unique project in the kitchen renovation market. Remarkably durable, this unique product allows consumers to transform their kitchens at a fraction of the cost of granite or quartz and also offers opportunities for decorative finishers to make a lucrative income.

Good news for decorative finishers: The housing market is moving full steam ahead as indicated by a nine-year high in existing home sales and an uptick in new single-family housing starts and completions.

What a thrill it must be to have your work catch the eye of one of the greatest authors of all time. Decorative artist Jesse Ganteaume painted an authentic-looking costume that garnered such a reaction from George R.R Martin, author of A Song of Fire and Ice. This epic book series is the basis for a little TV show you might have heard of: HBO's "Game of Thrones."

Diane Capuano Franklin and Tammy Adamson-McMullen, the publishers of the Focus on Faux online magazine, have launched a new ancillary blog as a vehicle for providing additional information, tips, advice, insights and inspiration to the faux-finishing and decorative painting community.
