Trends In Interior Wood Finishing
Chances are you’re as busy as ever, and as the economy remains sluggish, your decorating budget may not be as large as you’d like. The good news for those who love interior wood finishing? There are plenty of products that will help you enhance your home’s décor while saving you time and money.
High-End Looks without the High-End Price Tags
You’ve seen them in home decorating magazines and high-end home furnishing catalogs: those weathered wood tones that lend a classic, understated elegance to any setting. “Consumers are looking for ways to get those styles, but they don’t want the high-end prices,” states Jacquelyn Ferrara, director of marketing for Minwax and Formby's, Sherwin-Williams Wood Care Products. “They also recognize quality wood furniture—well-constructed, solid wood pieces—and they know that most furniture just isn't built the way it used to be."
The solution, according to Ferrara: Reuse and repurpose these pieces, stylistically integrating them with other pieces in their home.
One way to achieve this is through the use of stains and clear protective finishes, such as those featured in the Minwax® line. Minwax stays on top of trends by enhancing its wood stain color palettes to keep up with evolving trends. A case in point are the two new colors recently added to the popular Minwax® Wood Finish™ line of interior wood stains: Weathered Oak and Classic Gray.
“We’re seeing these tones on TV design shows and in high-end catalogs on flooring, furniture, cabinetry and more,” Ferrara said, “and now DIYers can achieve these same colors themselves.”
Maintain Your Sense of Style
Interior wood finishing fits into consumers’ desire to upgrade the look of their homes without spending a large sum of money—something particularly desirable under the present economic conditions and the tepid housing market. “For instance, if a homeowner wants a new look but doesn’t want to spring for new furniture for their living room, or new kitchen cabinets, there is still a solution—Minwax® PolyShades®,” Ferrara reports.
Ferrara describes the product as a one-step stain and finish that allows consumers to transform a room by easily changing the color of polyurethane-finished furniture, wood cabinets and other wood pieces. “The process, which is designed to facilitate changing from a lighter to a darker tone, is very straightforward,” she explains. “You simply give the existing wood a light sanding, wipe off the sanding dust, then apply PolyShades® with a natural-bristle brush. You’ll be done in no time, and you’ll have a whole new look for your wood without the hassle of heavy sanding or stripping. “
As Time Goes By…
Consumers not only wish to save money when decorating their homes, but they are also looking to save time. “Even with ‘automated this’ and ‘apps for that,' there never seems to be enough time to do the things that you want to do,” Ferrara says. “Fortunately, there is an ever-growing array of products that help you save time—whether decorating, cleaning or maintaining your home—while getting terrific results.
In addition to the aforementioned Minwax® PolyShades®, another example of a time-saving product is the one-step Minwax® Express Color Wiping Stain & Finish. “It’s perfect for beginners as well as experienced wood finishers who want a fast, easy way to stain and protect their project,” Ferrara says.
As Ferrara explains, Express Color provides rich color and a beautiful protective finish in just one step. “Simply wipe it on with a soft, clean cloth, then wipe off any excess in the direction of the wood grain, and you are done. Let it dry overnight and the project is finished and ready for use.”
Express Color is available in eight popular colors–four classic wood tones teamed with four vibrant decorator colors. Available wood tones are Oak, Walnut, Mahogany and Pecan, and contemporary colors include Emerald, Crimson, Indigo and Onyx. A bonus: The water-based formula of the product makes for low odor, fast drying time and easy cleanup.
There are other time-saving interior finishing products in the Minwax® lineup. Minwax® Water Based WoodSheen® is a simple-to-use stain that allows you to achieve beautiful color and a classic, hand-rubbed finish in a matter of minutes. “Just apply, wipe away the excess, let dry and you're done,” Ferrara explains.
Meanwhile, Minwax® Wipe-on Poly®. is a durable, clear polyurethane that provides protection with classic, hand-rubbed beauty. It is easy to apply using a cloth to avoid drips and brushmarks. “It is the perfect clear protective finish for your interior wood and is available in both oil- and water-based formulas,” Ferrara reports.
An increasing number of products in the interior wood finishing market feature water-based formulations. These are great for the consumer, because they provide low odor, faster dry time and easy clean-up.
In addition to the water-based products already mentioned, Minwax® makes: Minwax® Water Based Wood Stain, available in 50 wood tone and decorator colors; Minwax® Polycrylic® Protective Finish, a durable, non-ambering topcoat; and Minwax® Water Based Oil-Modified Polyurethane, a clear topcoat that provides superior durability with the convenience of a water-based finish.
“Most water-based wood-finishing products are lower in VOCs (volatile organic compounds) as well, allowing wood finishers to be more environmentally responsible without sacrificing product efficacy or, most importantly, beautiful results,” Ferrara concludes.
