Nothing can transform a space more quickly than paint. That transformation takes on soothing, fresh and ethereal properties this year as two major paint companies have named blue and blue-green as their No. 1 colors of 2016.

Think airy skies and misty oceans—cheerful shades of blue that emit a sense of serenity and calmness, according to paint brand DULUX® Paints. The company has named an ethereal blue, called Bear Run (10BG 46/112) as its top color. Other popular blues named by Dulux Paints are Blazer Blue (43BB 09/340), Teton Sky (10BB Dulux 49/137) and Blue Blood (47BB 14/349).

“Blue may not be the first paint color you’d choose for your home, but next to neutrals, there's no easier hue to work with than blue,” says Martin Tustin-Fuchs, brand manager for Dulux Paints Tustin-Fuchs. “Anyone who has the opportunity to give blue a try on even one wall appreciates the peaceful, calming effect the color emits.”

Meanwhile, PPG Paint has named a soft blue-green as the color of the year. Paradise Found (PPG-1135-5) is described by the company as “an organic, aloe green with an undertone of blue that offers at once a subtle but serious sense of ease and rejuvenation.”

PPG Paint's Paradise Found is a soft blue-green.
